School closed for service delivery protest

Residents demanding service delivery from Ndwedwe municipality.

Residents of Mary Grey towards Bhamshela in Ndwedwe are protesting demanding service delivery from Ndwedwe municipality.

According to Mlindeni Dube they are complaining about electricity, water and delay on the building of a sport centre in the area. Two schools in the area are closed and a mobile clinic vehicle was chased away yesterday by the angry residents.

“We have no electricity in our area and some residents have decided to connect the electricity illegally.”

Since last year seven people have been electrocuted by the illegal electricity connections in the area.

The protest started on May 12 and mayor Maxwell Hadebe came to receive the memorandum. He promised to return on Sunday, May 24.

“He did not come therefore we are back onto the street until we get answers from the municipality,”said Dube. According to Dube there are two dams that supply the area with water, one is in Sdumbini and Nsuze, but they have been getting water via water trucks, which he claims comes once a week.

Ndwedwe municipality was not available for comment.
