The Makhosi Khosi Communal Property Trust approached the land claims court for large parts of the North Coast, a claim that was first launched in 1994.
The trust represents the Qwabe clan who claim that the land that is now residential, upmarket areas and agricultural land belonged to their forefathers.
The matter is in court, but no court date has been settled on as of yet.
Since the matter was raised in 1994, development continued and gave life to the growing town of Ballito and the luxurious Zimbali resort.
The Commission on Restitution of Land Rights advertised a notice last week calling for people who wished to lodge claims on 130 properties to do so at the department of rural development and land reform in Pietermaritzburg before the end of August.
The claim covers the land from the Tongaat river to Umhlali river, including towns like Ballito, Salt Rock, Shaka’s Rock and Westbrook.
