The fight against liquor

Alcohol addiction is a big problem but first people have to have the desire to stop drinking.

It was heartbreaking to hear how alcohol can destroy peoples lives on Sunday, July 26 as the Alcoholics Anonymous Stanger Heights group celebrated their 11th anniversary at KwaDukuza Town Hall.

According to the event co-ordinator the group has about 20 members and they meet every Tuesday and Friday afternoon at the Stanger Hospital.

“We are a group of men and women, we share experiences, strength and hope with each other that may solve our common problem and help others recover from alcoholism,” said the co-ordinator.

He said anyone is welcome to attend their meetings, whether you are an alcoholic or not.

At the celebration there were people from all over the province as the organisation has about 180 groups.

One of the members said the group has helped him a lot and if you join, you will need to follow the steps that the group has for alcoholics wanting to be sober.

“I lost my parents through alcohol. If I was not an alcoholic myself by that time, I could have saved them,” said the member.

To be part of the group you only need the desire to stop drinking and everything is highly anonymous.
