Five things you should know about strawberries
Remember this the next time you enjoy some strawberries and cream!
Ahead of the Ballito Strawberry Festival next week, here are five interesting facts about strawberries.
1. Strawberries are the only fruit that wear their seeds on the outside.
In fact, an average strawberry has about 200 seeds on them!
2. Strawberries are not actually berries, like blueberries or grapes.
That’s because berries technically carries its seeds on the inside.
If you want to get more technical, botanists consider each seed on a strawberry as its own separate fruit. Wait, what? It’s like a meta-fruit!
3. Strawberries are members of the rose family.
Now that’s just making things complicated.
4. The strawberry plant is a perennial.
If you plant one now, it will come back next year and the following and the year after that.
Once it bears fruit it will be productive for about five years.
5. Rinsing strawberries speeds up spoiling.
If you plan to keep your strawberries in the fridge for a few days, wait until before you eat them to clean them.
