Ballito resident turns Elizabeth Drive pink for breast cancer awareness

Mickey Lottering first started her Pink Trees initiative while living in Gauteng in 2012.

Elizabeth Drive in Ballito is turning pink this October as resident Mickey Lottering rallies her neighbours in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Lottering launched her Pink Trees initiative in 2012 while living in Gauteng. After moving to Ballito, she took a break to care for her father, but has now revived the project with renewed enthusiasm.

Several trees along Elizabeth Drive are now wrapped in bright pink fabric, creating an eye-catching reminder of the importance of breast cancer awareness.

Inspired by friends who have faced cancer, Lottering hopes to encourage conversations about the disease and remind people that breast cancer can affect men as well as women.

“Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate; it does not matter your gender. It can affect us all,” said Lottering.

She also urged people to be aware of changes in their bodies and seek medical advice when something seems wrong.

“If you notice something feels off with your body, check it out. It is better to be safe than to be sorry,” she said.

Residents can support the initiative by purchasing pink fabric, T-shirts or caps, or simply wearing pink to show their support.

“Pink is a healing and uplifting colour. Support Cansa and wear pink.”

Lottering thanked her Elizabeth Drive neighbours for embracing the initiative, with several purchasing fabric and wrapping trees outside their homes.

Proceeds from the project will go to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), which provides cancer-related support services to patients and their families.

Supporters can purchase fabric directly from Lottering or enquire at a Cansa branch.

The Pink Trees project runs until the end of November. To support, contact Mickey Lottering on 083 365 7592.
