The feared rapist and robber Xolani “Desperado” Mfeka was found guilty and received heavy sentences at the Pietermaritzburg High court last Wednesday.
According to detective warrant officer Deepa Naidoo of the KwaDukuza family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit (FCS), Desperado will serve 15 years each for five armed robberies, life imprisonment for one count of rape and 10 years each for two other rape cases.
“He pleaded not guilty throughout the trial and 40 witnesses testified against him,” said Naidoo.
Desperado was arrested in January 2014 by warrant officer Vusi Blose. Naidoo and warrant officer Vivi Kistiah took care of the investigation.
During the time when he appeared at the Umhlali and KwaDukuza courts, the Etete community protested outside the court opposing bail.
Community policing forum chairperson of Velani Township Bongumusa Mkhize said they are happy with the outcome.
“We are satisfied with the sentences and we appreciate the hard work of the police who handled the investigation. We are very happy,” said Mkhize.
Mkhize said he hopes that Desperado will be an example to other criminals in KwaDukuza.
Major Bhekithemba Shabane of KwaDukuza FCS complimented his officers on an outstanding investigation.
