The national crime statistics for the period of April 2014 to March 2015 were released by Minister of police Nathi Nhleko and National Police Commissioner Riah Phyega last week.
The Umhlali police station serves a large area of about 30km, from the Tongaat River to Groutville and inland to Nsuze. This includes the Dolphin Coast and the popular holiday town of Ballito.
Here are the most prevalent crimes committed with cases opened over the past year.
The top five crimes

1. Drug related crime 563 – 503 *According to Umhlali Station Commander Lt Col Dieter Fittkau this relates to the number of drug related arrests made by the station.
2. Burglary at residential premises 470 – 451
3. All theft not mentioned elsewhere 452 – 478
4. Assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm 250 – 245
5. Robbery with aggravating circumstances 117 – 150
