Bail battle finalised

Community satisfied with outcome.

Finally the bail application for the man accused of raping and killing a five-year-old girl in Etete had come to an end.

The accused was denied bail on Wednesday, September 30 at the KwaDukuza Magistrate court and his trial will start on November 19.

Velile Mgomezulu was allegedly taken by the accused while sleeping in her aunts house in Etete on the night of July 4. She was found in the morning of July 5 near a drain with serious injuries to her head. She was taken to Stanger Hospital were she died around midnight.

The community of Etete had been protesting outside the court whenever the accused appeared over the past three months. On Wednesday they were joined by a few residents of Mandeni and it was battle won at last for them when they went home knowing that the accused was denied bail.

Velani township community policing forum chairperson Bongumusa Mkhize expressed his satisfaction over the outcome.

“We now hope that he will be found guilty and get a heavy sentence for his actions,” said Mkhize.
