Government calls for vigilance on the country’s roads
Country commemorates Transport Month in October.
October is Transport Month and the South African government calls on all road-users to exercise caution on the roads and obey the traffic rules.
As road accidents take a massive toll on society, road safety remains one of the government’s priorities.
The theme this year is “Together we move South Africa forward.”
With the festive season approaching, the department of transport is urging all road users and pedestrians to be more vigilant.
“Every person is accountable for a responsible behavior on the roads. A death is one too many. We cannot tolerate any more carnage on our roads,” said acting cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams.
“Road fatalities are a major concern to government, however it takes society as a whole to ensure that they play their part in curbing the high accident rate. The death toll as a result of road accidents remains at an unacceptable level. Too many lives are lost and families duly affected because of, among others, reckless driving,” she said.
The department said drivers should ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before they embark on the long road for holidays.
