Armed robbers bomb Stanger ATM’s

A shootout ensued between the robbers and police.

A group of armed men bombed six ATM’s at the Standard Bank in Stanger in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

KZN police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said KwaDukuza SAPS responded to the ATM bombings in King Shaka Street.

The robbers hijacked and disarmed security guards at the bank while the rest of the group bombed the ATM.

Zwane said when police arrived at the bank, they were shot at by a group of about 20 heavily armed robbers.

A female police constable was wounded and the robbers fled in getaway vehicles.

He said it was not clear at this stage whether anything was taken.

KwaDukuza SAPS are investigating a case of armed robbery, malicious damage to property, attempted murder and hijacking.

Zwane said all police experts were at the scene of the crime this morning but no arrests have been made.
