SAMWU defeat municipal cost-cutting measures

Employees will get cash for their unused leave days.

KwaDukuza municipality has been forced by the South African Municipal Workers Union to pay its employees for unused leave days.

Three months ago, KDM said it will only pay four of the eight leave days because they wanted to save money.

However this was opposed by SAMWU, which claimed that the decision was unfair and it had not been discussed with the workers. Workers then threatened to go on strike or open a case against KDM at the local government bargaining council.

KwaDukuza SAMWU chairperson Bonginkosi Nhanca said they are happy that the municipality had realised that they made a mistake.

“We have our eight days back and the case that we had opened at the bargaining council will be withdrawn,” he said.
