Family shocked by death of husband

The 45-year-old Martin Willis who collapsed and died at Ballito parkrun on Saturday, November 7 was believed to be fit and healthy.

Martin’s wife, Colleen, who was there when her husband passed away, said that she and her family had decided to be healthier and started exercising together in the weekly parkrun in order to improve their lifestyle and connect as a family.

“Martin had completed the parkrun five or six times before this happened. It was very hot on the day and I think he just pushed himself too hard,” said Colleen, who added that Martin had no heart conditions they were aware of.

Colleen said that she was deeply touched by the amount of love and support her family has received from the Ballito community.

“I feel so lucky to be surrounded by such a caring community, who jumped to Martin’s aid as soon as he got into trouble,” said Colleen, who said that despite the best efforts of everyone at the race, no one was able to resuscitate her husband.

Colleen said that her children are devastated at the loss of their father, especially her daughters, who saw the whole thing happen.

“My husband was an amazing person with a heart of gold – he was the most awesome, positive person around and he is really going to be missed,” said Colleen, who said that right now she just wants to be there for her children.

An open memorial service will be held at the Umhlali Country Club on Friday at 2pm.
