Pimp your ride, Mo style

You may have noticed the occasional moustachioed vehicle passing you as you dodge traffic on your way to work and if you have ever wondered why, you will be pleasantly surprised.

The stickers are the brainchild of Scott Skewis, a 29-year-old Ballito resident who started a fundraising campaign last year unofficially called the ‘Tache Drive with his friend Geoffrey Butcher and his girlfriend Steff Reynolds to take the message of cancer awareness on the road and bumper to bumper.

“We decided to sell each sticker for R200, with 90% of the proceeds donated to Highway Hospice cancer foundation,” said Skewis, who highlighted that 10% has to be allocated for the manufacture of the stickers.

This small, community led initiative raised a sizeable R20 000 for cancer research in its first year of operation in 2014. The ‘Tache Drive has already revved up about R30 000 in donations and Skewis said that the hope is to raise between R50 000 and R60 000 by the end of this year.

Given that the ‘Tache Drive is not a registered non-profit organisation (NPO), the quirky moustache stickers are being held at a number of sites around the Dolphin Coast including Soapbox Carwash and Valet centre at the Ballito Junction shopping centre and the BBM Cafe at Tiffany’s, where they can be bought.

“Whenever Movember comes around, everyone grows a moustache, but few people ever do anything about it, which is why we wanted to start something different,” said Skewis, who added that now women can also participate, as the moustache growing idea behind Movember has naturally excluded them from taking part.

Skewis said that the stickers grab a lot of public attention, and by placing them on your car, you are taking the message of cancer awareness wherever you go.

With cancer affecting almost every family in every country around the world, Skewis expressed his hope that the ‘Tache Drive will take off and gain the local traction the campaign deserves.
