Continuing our weekend clubs and societies tour through the Dolphin Coast, we stop at the Forest Hills German Shepherd Dog Club Ballito to see what the four paws and two feet get up to.

While the name suggests this club is exclusively for German Shephards, they do not discriminate against any slobbery tongues – big or small, thoroughbred or pavement special, all are welcome.

The club meets on a Saturday morning at Townsend Park, Ballito, and together with lifelong dog trainer, Scott Farlam, they get to work on halt, sit, down and stay.

“I have always trained dogs and I believe in as much positive reinforcement training as possible,” said Farlam.

“All you need to join the Club is your dog, a normal collar (no choke collars), a lead, treats, your dog’s favourite toy and some comfy shoes for yourself.”

Various classes area offered from cute, clumsy pups learning their first commands to beginners and advanced classes using off-lead, distance training.

The club’s chairperson, Gaby Lyle said they have got some agility equipment and will be doing agility training as well.

“The dogs love the various jumps and the tunnels to crawl through. Besides the classes, we also have a monthly beach walk.”
