“According to media reports the convoy was travelling north when a bakkie from the unit collided head-on with a vehicle going in the opposite direction,” said DA leader in the KZN legislature Sizwe Mchunu.

Two women were killed and three others seriously injured.

The occupants of the premier’s escort vehicle sustained minor injuries.

It was not known whether they were escorting the premier at the time.

The DA conveyed its deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those involved and in particular to the families of the deceased.

Friday night’s accident again raised serious questions around the use of so-called “blue light brigades” by politicians, Sizwe Mchunu said.

“Over the years, KZN has witnessed a number of accidents involving these units. Lives have been lost and road users pushed off the road.

“The DA’s view has always been that KZN’s government needs to either impose a complete ban on the use of blue lights or at least impose stringent regulations around their use.

“We have made this call numerous times and also initiated a debate in the legislature on the topic.

“The DA is committed to ensuring that a full-scale investigation takes place; one which establishes the cause and any other contributory factors. The families of those who were involved in last night accident must get answers,” he said.
