Woman and child plowed down by taxi, sparks outrage
Residents have asked for speed bumps to be placed on the R102 where it travels through the township.
A woman and a child were knocked over by a taxi on Friday, April 1 in Etete, sparking outrage in the community
Residents are calling for speed bumps to be placed on the R102 where it travels through the township.
A huge crowd of angry residents protested and closed the road on Friday evening, claiming that the transport department was ignoring them.
An application letter for speed bumps was submitted to the department by the community a long time ago but nothing has been done.
Chairperson of community policing forum in Velani Township Bongumusa Mkhize, said six people had been knocked over by vehicles on that road since February.
“I was there when the letter was written, given to all relevant people and organisations to sign, and sent to the department. The community is angry because engineers came to do the markings but to date nothing has been done,” said Mkhize.
A meeting between Etete councillor Njabulo Mbonambi and the transport department was scheduled for Wednesday, April 6.
The issue of speed bumps came up in February when residents complained about being excluded during the construction of a taxi rank. At the time, they were told that the construction company that was going to put speed bumps in Ndwedwe, would put speed bumps in Etete as soon as they were done in Ndwedwe.
