Call for more colour

The Lions international director, Sanjay Khetan, emphasised the importance of the rainbow nation within the organisation during their annual convention at Braeside on Saturday, May 7.

Khetan said that as much as he hopes that more people joins the Lions, he would be more delighted to see people of all races becoming members.

“South Africa is a diverse country therefore representing the rainbow nation is extremely important in our organisation,” said Khetan.

More than 300 Lions came to Ballito for the convention on May 6 and 7 at La Montagne and Braeside.

Ballito Lions member and one of the convention co-ordinators, William Power agreed with Khetan, saying that people should stop thinking the Lions club is a “Mlungu’s Club” but they should know that it is a club to help the community, regardless of race or religion.

“Currently we have nine members in our club and we encourage people from other areas in KwaDukuza to join us,” said Power.

The Lions Club of Ballito is involved in several projects to uplift the poor, including the Ithemba Labasha Community day, a golf day, and a breast cancer awareness walk. The organisation currently has more than 46000 clubs in 240 countries with 1.4 million members around the world.

The Lions also elected new leadership: The Multiple District Chairman is Denis Meyer from the Port Shepstone Club; District A Lance Maytham, Bredasdorp; District B Bernd Gerhard, Wilro Park in Gauteng; District C Kim van Wyk from North Durban Club and District D Zwaai Kruger from Sedgefield.
