Police find stash of illegal firearms in Ndwedwe

A 60-year-old man was arrested after he failed to give satisfactory explanation to the police.

Police found six unlicensed firearms including handguns, shotguns and 303 rifles in a rondavel in the Gonothini area, Ndwedwe yesterday.

“Responding to a tip-off about illegal firearms and ammunition in Gonothini the Umhlali task team, detectives and Ilembe cluster members went there at 9am,” said Captain Nqobile Gwala

Police searched the homestead identified in the tip-off and discovered the stash of illegal firearms as well as an assortment of live ammunition.

“A 60-year-old man was arrested after he failed to give satisfactory explanation about the firearms to the police.”

The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to find out if they were used in any crimes in the country such as faction fights, taxi related crimes and armed robberies.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Bheki Langa praised the members for their excellent work that led to the recovery of the firearms.

“By recovering these firearms, we have saved  many lives that would be attacked by the criminals using these firearms. I also thank the members of the community who raised an alarm and reported these firearms to the police. Your continuous support in crime fighting is highly appreciated,” he said.
