Ballito equestrians win at inter-provincials

"It's always nice to see Ballito riders competing and winning on a national level." - Dave Winton

Ballito’s riders pulled out all the stops to take a number of positions in the winners circle in the Spurwing interprovincial horse trials in Karkloof from October 14-16.

Eventing horse trials combines the disciplined sport of dressage, the fun of show jumping and a challenging cross-country course.

KZN won the 90’s class interprovincial team Championship and in the individual Championship the Ballito riders also managed to deliver strong performances.

Kiara Mattioda and her horse, Northern Tribe, were the winners in the 90's class.

In the 90’s class the winner was Northern Tribe ridden by Kiara Mattioda from the Mattioda Stables and in 5th was My Valentino ridden by Kate van den Berg from the Galloping Winds Stables.

In the 80’s class was Fort Nelson ridden by Dave Winton who came third.

Winton told The Courier that Gauteng often dominated these events, so KZN did really well to win this year.

Winton’s horse Fort Nelson is a retired racetrack horse who has been given a second chance through these types of events.

“This was Fort Nelson’s first time competing in the 80’s class and he did really well,” says Winton.

“His sire, Fort Wood was a Durban July winner so I’m ecstatic that he has another chance to shine and compete.”
