18 000 ragers expected at this year’s festival

Up to 18 000 people are expected to come to attend this year's festival and this is not only the matrics.

With the official Ballito Rage Village hotel (Regal Inn) sold out, Ballito is one month away from crawling with young guys in vests and girls in tiny bikinis.

According to Darren Sandras, director of One-Eyed Jack, the public relations firm for the Rage Festival, up to 18 000 people are expected to come to attend this year’s festival and this is not only the matrics.

“Rage Festival is more than a ‘matric’ festival. We can say that up to 30% of all attendees are post-matric festival-going university students up to the age of 24, which shows the broader youth appeal of the festival,” said Sandras.

Despite rumbling from last year’s Ragers about the expense of travelling to and from Durban for the big concerts at The Sound Factory, Sandras said this has had little effect on the decision of the Ragers to stay in Ballito or Umhlanga, the other official Rage village.

“We have noticed a slight dip in people going to Ballito overall, but believe that to be more related to the current economy than anything else. The tradition of attending a KZN school and going to Ballito vs attending a Gauteng school and going to Umhlanga remains strong.”

He said while there are lots of line ups in Durban, Ballito is still a huge part of the Rage Festival programme.

“We also own Crush Night Club so it is very important to us that Ballito remains a hub. Crush will operate every night and La Montagne also has a great afternoon programme of fun activities.”

Sandras said they will not have a repeat of last year’s problems between Uber taxis and local taxis.

“There are existing city agreements which we are not at liberty to interfere with. As a result, we choose to “toe the line” and work with the local Ballito Taxi Association and respect their right to operate in the precinct.

“As such, we are not able to offer the Rage Rail service to Durban this year. We have no doubt Uber will offer their service in Ballito over the period, but again, our preference is to keep the peace so we will not have any partnerships with them. The Regal Inn is an official Rage Village hotel, as such there will be transport offered.”

The Rage Festival will run from November 26 to December 3.
