North Coast companies rewarded for recyling

The 2016 entrants proved that organisations are becoming more environmentally conscious, showcasing a reduction in energy, water usage and waste generation."

Five North Coast companies have proved that they take waste management seriously.

At the Institute of Waste Management SA awards for KZN held in Durban last week, Tongaat Hulett Darnall Mill walked away with the small manufacturing award and Dolphin Coast Landfill Management won the service category.

Reclite from Shaka’s Head won the innovation trophy and Sims Recycling Solutions won the bronze certificate in the small manufacturing category.

One of the first time entrants, Ballito Engen Garage won a gold certificate in the service industry category. Co-owner Rajesh Ramperthab said since they started recycling waste they have reduced the number of rubbish bags from 21 to two a week.

“We recycle almost 90% of our waste and it all started by educating the staff about the importance of taking care of the environment,” said Ramperthab.

They have recycled bins for paper, glass and plastic. They also have a water recycling plant which they use for the car wash.

IWMSA KZN Branch manager Sue Beningfield said: “It is fantastic to see the winning organisations’ reports. The 2016 entrants proved that organisations are becoming more environmentally conscious, showcasing a reduction in energy, water usage and waste generation.”

The judging process included a site visit and audit by a team of professionals from the IWMSA, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) and the National Cleaner Production Centre of South Africa (NCPC-SA).

The IWMSA is a professional, multi-disciplinary organisation with voluntary membership established to promote the science and practice of waste management and is a non-profit organisation.
