Hijackers open fire on highway at Zinkwazi
This notorious stretch on the N2 is fast becoming a hijacking hotspot.
A man was forced off the N2 highway near to the Zinkwazi off-ramp by gun-toting hijackers this morning.
Steve Fox, manager of Business Against Crime in Mandeni told The Courier that a businessman from Isithebe was forced off the N2 by three men in a white Polo some time before 10am this morning.
“The Polo pulled up alongside the victim on the highway and gestured for him to stop,” said Fox.
“When he kept driving they fired two shots at his vehicle, forcing him to comply.”
Two men then got into the victim’s car and drove him into the sugarcane fields near Darnall.
The three attackers assaulted the man and took an unknown amount of money and his cellphone from him.
“They spent some time in the sugarcane trying to find and disable the victim’s vehicle’s tracking system.”
Unable to disable the tracking system, the three men fled in their vehicle – apparently throwing the victim’s keys away on the side of the road.
Fox warned that this is an ongoing problem and that the stretch of the N2 near the Zinkwazi off-ramp was becoming a hijacking hotspot.
“We urge people to be extra cautious when travelling along this stretch of road,” said Fox
