Umdloti thieves nabbed in high speed chase through North Coast

"Once the driver realised he was being followed, he fled on to the N2 South bound while being chased at high speed" - Nazir Sadack.

Two men seen breaking into cars in Umdloti were arrested following a high-speed chase from Ballito to Tongaat on Saturday.

According to Community Emergency Response Team Tongaat (CERT) and Marshall Security, they were alerted to be on the lookout for a red BMW 3 series.

The vehicle was being sought in connection with an attempted theft out of motor vehicle in Umdloti earlier that day where two men were disturbed while attempting to break into a car and fled in an unknown direction.

The vehicle was later spotted near Ballito by a member of the Umdloti CPF, who noted the two men had changed the vehicle’s number plates.

“The member informed our chairperson and kept vigil, following the vehicle to Ballito while SAPS were notified,” said CERT’s Nazir Sadack.

“Once the driver realised he was being followed, he fled on to the N2 south bound while being chased at high speed.”

Attempting to elude the authorities, the thieves took the off-ramp to Watson Highway, with members of the Marshall Security North Coast Special Operations Team in hot pursuit.

By this time Tongaat SAPS had joined in the chase.

The vehicle turned down a side road in the Brake Village area of Tongaat where members of the Tongaat police and Marshall Security intercepted it, bringing the dramatic chase to a halt.

They were both arrested.

Various items of clothing and other belongings believed to be stolen were found in the vehicle.

“False plates were also recovered and SAPS will check if they are linked to other crimes,” said Sadack.
