Power outage sparks Shaka’s Head N2 protest

The N2 is closed in both directions between Ballito and Salt Rock.

Protestors have taken to the N2 at Shaka’s Head this evening, closing it in both directions with burning logs and tyres.

IPSS paramedic Paul Herbst said that about 300 people were on the highway, some throwing rocks at motorists.

Traffic is being diverted at Ballito to the R102.

The township’s electricity has not been restored since yesterday’s hailstorm (although there were apparently also power failures on Friday) and this is apparently the cause of the uprising.

Parts of Salt Rock and Ballito have suffered a similar fate however there are no signs of unrest in the town.

According to Salt Rock cllr Malcolm Hubner the storm caused “major overhead cable damage” and the main network was severely damaged.

KwaDukuza (KDM) technicians have been working around the clock to restore the affected substations.

A WhatsApp message from the KDM control room stated that they were receiving an average of 20 calls every ten minutes from unhappy customers.
