Ski boat capsizes at Tinley Manor

The boat was carrying two men when it capsized at about 7am.

Rescuers worked for more than an hour this morning to right a capsized ski boat off Tinley Manor.

The boat was carrying two men when it capsized at about 7am.

“Luckily the crew were taken to safety by the local fisherman and bystanders,” said Specialised Rescue Unit’s Quentin Power.

He said the accident, that took place just behind back-line, was caused by large swells.

KwaDukuza lifeguards, SAPS Search and Rescue, Specialised Rescue Unit, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the IPSS Aquatic Rescue Unit worked for about an hour to turn the boat to the right side and to drain out the water.

The boat was then towed by the NSRI to Durban.

IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic Paul Herbst said it was a wonderful example of what can be done by working together.

“Thank you to all the units who responded and assisted. It is through multi-service collaboration that we collectively continue to save lives,” he said.
