Youth with a green mission in Shakaville
"One of the things we can do is to make them aware of all the recycling options they have, instead of throwing away their rubbish" - Sikhulile chairperson Sbusiso Ngubane.
A group of young people from Shakaville with a vision for clean townships around have got the Christmas Fair Fund’s support.
Sikhulile Community Development aims to see unused land, often misused for illegal dumping, transformed into parks.
The Christmas Fair Fund decided to help the group achieve their aim, in particular through educating people about the downside of littering.
Chairlady Gaby Lyle said: “One of our members, Fran Jex, contacted Ngubane after reading about their project in The Courier. We sponsored him with R5000 to get him on his feet.
“We also contacted the Coastal Farmers and Ngubane was sponsored with cleaning equipment including overalls, spades and rakes. He is doing a wonderful thing and we want to continue supporting him,” said Lyle.
Sikhulile chairperson Sbusiso Ngubane said he has realised that cleaning the townships without educating the residents was like using a blunt knife. Therefore the group decided to focus on creating awareness about pollution and educating residents on the benefits of recycling. Ngubane said due to lack of funding, Jex advised him to start recycling so that the organisation can generate an income.
“We can clean all the dump sites but people keep on dumping their rubbish there. So we want to focus more on educating them about the importance of not polluting their area.”
One of the things we can do is to make them aware of all the recycling options they have, instead of throwing away their rubbish,” he said.
Ngubane will also target schools for his recycling campaign.
So far, he has visited Ziphozethu Primary School in Lindelani. He is planning to visit more schools around KwaDukuza.
Ngubane said if residents do not want to recycle their waste, they can call Sikhulile to collect it. Contact Ngubane on 078 672 3797.
