Clean slate for Shrimp Lane beach
With the constant rainy weather and the fragile frontal dune near the shower block, the team had to be patient and work carefully not to cause any unnecessary damage.
The old shower block at Grannies Pool near Shrimp Lane has finally been demolished, giving the popular beach a fresh look, just in time for summer.
Dolphin Coast Conservancy chairlady Di Jones said they approached the municipality a few months ago to remove the terrible eyesore.
“We were aware it would not be on the municipality’s budget, so we offered to find sponsorship to get the work done. It took a few months to get the appropriate environmental approval and the go-ahead from KDM to commence the work,” said Jones.
“We approached Dolphin Coast Waste Management to donate a skip to enable us to have the rubble removed and were overwhelmed by their generosity when they offered the use of their TLB to do the job, which with a skilled driver, Nkululeko Ndima and their operations manager, Jonathan van Rensburg to oversee the exercise. I think the grateful thanks of our community will, without doubt, go to DCWM and their team for the fantastic community spirit they have shown.”
With the constant rainy weather and the fragile frontal dune near the shower block, the team had to be patient and work carefully not to cause any unnecessary damage.
“All of the rubble went to Ballito Crushers at the old quarry where the rubble will be re-used, which means our mantra of ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’ has been carried out as well. We encourage all construction teams to make use of the free service offered by Ballito Crushers, which will help stop the illegal dumping of building rubble at the side of the road.”
Jones said two new shower heads are being fixed to the side of the existing ablution block, with a small foot bath to cater for run-off water, while the frontal dune is going to be rehabilitated.
