Ward committee election marred by violence
"The place erupted and the next thing we knew, chairs were flying across the room and I had to be taken out" - DA Ward 21 Councillor Tommy du Toit
The ward committee election for the new, disjointed Dolphin Coast Ward 21 has proved to be hugely problematic.
Ward councillors elected in the August 3 local government elections were required to form committees consisting of 11 members, whose main responsibility is to provide feedback from the community to council.
However, during this process, DA Ward 21 Councillor Tommy du Toit has had a tough few weeks.
The ward comprises three three areas – a section of Ballito (south of Ballito Drive) and two areas about 15 km inland, Driefontein and Sinqobeli. At the first election meeting in Driefontein, Du Toit was forced to make a quick getaway.
“It started off fine but many of the community members are strongly opposed to the ANC. Chaos broke out when an ANC member was nominated as a committee member. The place erupted and the next thing we knew, chairs were flying across the room and I had to be taken out.
“I later discovered that I was also in the wrong because of a sign that I made with my hand was read as support for the independent candidate. A traffic cop said I should leave before the people killed me.”
Du Toit was to elect three members from each area of his ward.
His second attempt at a committee election was held in Ballito, which attracted 17 people. However, there were strong disagreements between the Ballito and Driefontein residents present.
An argument erupted over the election of representatives of Ballito Neighbourhood Watch and the Dolphin Coast Ratepayers’ Association into the ward committee.
“The Driefontein members argued that DOCRRA and BNW should not be added to the ward committee even though the rules say that two NGOs could be added. Their argument was based on the assumption that BNW and DOCRRA would only work with Ballito residents and Driefontein and Sinqobeli would not benefit.
“But it works both ways. If you think about it, how will Ballito benefit from members from Driefontein? As a result, DOCRRA and BNW are not a part of the committee that they could have added much value to.”
Despite the disagreements, the committee elections are almost complete. Another election is going to be held in Driefontein on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Ward 22 (Sheffield) and Ward 6 (north of Ballito drive) committee meetings have been successful.
DA Ward 6 Cllr Tammy Colley said she is happy with the committee members.
“The process ran smoothly and we hope to have a well-run committee that will make a difference in the area,” she said.
