Salt Rock road resurfacing nears completion

The asphalt re-surfacing forms part of the current Periodic Maintenance Project on the National Route 2 between Umdloti and New Guelderland.

The road resurfasing at the Salt Rock interchange (Tiffany’s) should be done by Wednesday December 7, weather permitting.

The traffic congestion as a result of the construction has been a source of frustration for residents.

But many have noted that they are grateful for the man appointed to direct traffic.

The flamboyant road official directing traffic during the construction has been nicknamed ‘Mr Flappy Hands’ by Salt Rock residents.

SANRAL eastern region project manager Ridhwaan Mahomed said the asphalt re-surfacing forms part of the current Periodic Maintenance Project on the National Route 2 between Umdloti  and New Guelderland.

To date the following road resurfacings have been completed:

  • Stanger interchange
  • Groutville interchange
  • Tinley Manor interchange
  • N2 Bridge Deck at Tinley Manor interchange

Shaka’s Rock interchange will be next and the last interchange to be re-surfaced.

The work at Chaka’s Rock will start on Thursday December 8, weather permitting.

Mahomed said Chaka’s Rock would not be finished this year due to the annual December break starting on December 15.

“However during the December break the road will be fully open for traffic.

“It will be finished during January 2017.”

On the N2, the Thongathi river bridge, just north of the Tongaat Interchange, and the bridge across the Tongaat interchange, will follow and are planned for completion by end of January.
