Police recover millions at King Shaka airport

The man was attempting to smuggle seven suitcases of South African rands out of the country.

Quick and thorough police work lead to the arrest of a passenger at King Shaka international Airport attempting to abscond with millions of undeclared cash.

Police based at the airport arrested a 30-year-old man for contravention of the currency and exchange act on Saturday, December 3.

The police received a tip off that a passenger that would be travelling out of the country that afternoon with large sum of South African currency without declaring it at customs.

“Through intense investigation the police managed to trace the passenger to a flight that was leaving King Shaka Airport for Dubai,” said Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

“Police approached the airline and had the passenger, who at the time had already boarded the flight, leave the plane and had all his luggage offloaded.

“He was found to have checked in seven bags which were offloaded and scanned and all seven bags scanned showed the same images of currency.

“The bags were opened  in the presence of the passenger and it was found to all be South African currency and upon counting amounted to R12 229 200.00

“The passenger was placed under arrest and will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on charges of the contravention of the currency and exchange act today.

KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bheki Langa applauded the cops for their sterling work.

“We are ready to thwart any criminality during this festive season and beyond,” he said.
