Shaka’s Head folk are taking pride in their township

The enthusiastic volunteers, including supporters from Salt Rock and Simbithi Estate, collected so much rubbish that the two skips provided for the clean-up were filled to overflowing.

More than 50 Shaka’s Head residents took to the streets of their township last Wednesday with rubbish bags in hand.

Resident Nomvula da Silver said they want to turn Shaka’s Head into a green township full of trees, vegetables and fresh fruit.

The enthusiastic volunteers, including supporters from Salt Rock and Simbithi Estate, collected so much rubbish that the two skips provided for the clean-up were filled to overflowing.

Da Silver said they hoped to inspire others to look after their environment and not allow Shaka’s Head to fall back into the state it was in before the clean-up.

“As Ballito is growing and Shaka’s Head being the nearest township, it is important to keep it clean. Imagine if some tourists want to see a township, they will probably come to our township. We need to ensure that it is clean and healthy,” said she said.

However they still have a lot to do in terms of making other residents aware about the importance of not littering. As they were cleaning the streets and asking people to take their dirt out of their yards, there were many who refused to join them.

To impress the important of taking care of the environment, Clare Swithenbank Bowman from the Ithemba Labasha said they have a litter4 tokens programme running in the township.

“Children collect rubbish and in return they get food or clothes that we collect from donors. So we not just giving them what they need but we teach them to clean they township and they are rewarded for their work,” she said.

The residents were also happy to see their councillor Mlamuli Ndlela taking part in the campaign.

“It is a very positive and exciting thing to see happening in our township and I am 100% behind them,” said Ndlela.

The Courier’s Facebook Live video of the clean-up received a hugly positive responce from our followers and as of Tuesday already had 3394 views.
