Ilembe cluster police speak up for the innocent
Although attendance was poor, many people showed their support by waving at the vehicles and shouting words of support to the police as they drove past.
The abuse of women and children is a cancer that often goes unreported.
Advocating for the community to rally around victims and report their abusers, police from the Ilembe cluster took to the streets for a 16 days of activism against the abuse of women and children walk last Wednesday.
“Most of these crimes happen in private, so we need the public to speak up and not allow such crimes to go unreported,” said Ilembe cluster commander Mandlenkosi Chirwa.
Chirwa was speaking at Shakaskraal Primary School after the walk.
The walk started from the park outside Shakaskraal clinic and ended by Rocksonic Night Club.
A convoy of police vehicles drove through the township of Shayamoya and Nkobongo leading the procession.
Although residents’ attendance was poor, many people showed their support by waving at the vehicles and shouting words of support to the police as they drove past.
A poem recited by Shakaskraal Primary pupils summed up the event: “There is no culture to abuse a woman and a true gentleman does not abuse a woman. Do not abuse a woman because you do not know the power of a woman.”
