Traditional healers are happy to partner with doctors

They will be taking this workshop around the Ilembe region to ensure that those healers who are new in the healing industry learn these skills.

Traditional healers are not against partnering with Western doctors to restore their patients to full health.

Speaking at a recent five-day workshop at KwaNevas Community Hall in Tshawini, secretary of the Traditional Healers’ Association in the Ilembe region

Robert Mthembu said they had a responsibility to ensure that no risks were taken with people’s lives.

“The 55 traditional healers who attended were taught how to detect when their patient needs to be taken to hospital or clinic before they can be treated by traditional medicine.

“For example, if someone comes to me suffering from an upset stomach, I need to get that person to the clinic first, before I give him or her my medicine.

“This is because we usually use strong medication so if you are very weak you may not be able to handle it and this could cause the person to deteriorate.

“People have the freedom to choose whether they would prefer a doctor or a traditional healer.

“However, I cannot risk that person’s life just because he chose to come to me before the hospital,” said Mthembu.

He said they will be taking this workshop around the Ilembe region to ensure that those healers who are new in the healing industry learn these skills.
