Catering company caught dumping trash in Shaka’s Head

According to municipal bylaws those caught dumping illegaly can be fined up to R8156 and have to pay for the municipality to clear the site.

The importance of not using illegal dumping sites can never be overemphasised, however, it looks like the problem is far from ending.

An Umhlali resident spotted a driver of a catering company, ZEMS catering, dumping trash at an illegal dumping site near Shaka’s Head last Friday.

Jill Hackland said she approached the driver and he told her that he was dumping there because everyone is doing it.

“He was using children to offload his truck and he actually paid them for the job. Those children will get sick,” said the angry Hackland.

Hackland said the illegal dumping is normally not done by people in the township, it is usually the construction companies and other businesses who use the illegal dump sites.

The owner of the ZEMS catering, Zamanje Mthembu, apologised for the illegal dumping.

“It was my son. I recently moved into Ballito from we don’t know where to dump our trash. We usually take it to the skips in Groutville. However, my son saw children playing soccer near the illegal dumpsite. They told him that it was the right place to dump.

“I do apologise. I was unaware of the incident until I was called by Hackland. I am sorry,” said Mthembu.

According to municipal bylaws those caught dumping illegaly can be fined up to R8156 and have to pay for the municipality to clear the site.
