New mall brings major employment boost

Once operational, the mall is expected to provide up to 1 500 permanent and part-time jobs of which about 80 per cent will be filled by locals, sustaining an estimated 10 000 community members.

The development of the new Ballito Junction mall will not only be a major economic boost to Ballito, but also to the wider area as preference for the appointment of staff will be given to KwaDukuza residents.

With about 100 days left to go before the opening of the R1.4 billion regional shopping centre, KDM and the Ballito Junction mall management have agreed that, wherever possible, vacancies will be filled by people from the municipality.

Once operational, the mall is expected to provide up to 1 500 permanent and part-time jobs of which about 80 per cent will be filled by locals, sustaining an estimated 10 000 community members.

Ilembe Chamber of Commerce CEO Cobus Oelofse said that the mall is exactly what KwaDukuza residents need.

“There are so many school leavers and graduates who are looking for employment. In so many cases their skill-set does is not what employers are looking for. But with the new mall, there will be a variety of jobs that people can choose from. So many families will benefit,” he said.

The mega-mall recently appointed a community liaison officer who will play a role in creating a database, receiving CVs and making the database available to tenants.

At a meeting on November 29, it was decided the Ballito Junction Mall owners will ensure that they will recruit local people and companies in the mall for anything that is in their control.

Adverts are being placed in local newspapers asking people to enrol on the database for possible employment.

Preference will be given to bona-fide residents of KwaDukuza.
