Shakaskraal clinic “a shambles”

Without an operations managers, Shakaskraal clinic is reportedly in a dismal state.

Shakaskraal clinic has been experiencing a world of troubles lately – water problems and toilets out of order for almost two months, plus a shortage of staff.

Ward 28 councillor Doeshiee Govender, who visited the clinic with his ward committee last week, said the service at the clinic was very bad.

The toilets are filthy and there is no shelter for patients. He accused nurses of mistreating patients and, as they did not wear their name tags, made it difficult for residents to complain about the bad treatment. The clinic staff are working without supervision as the operations manager resigned and the acting manager is on leave until the end of December.

“We will be drafting a memorandum that will be taken to the MEC for health in the province. What is going in this clinic is not acceptable,” said Govender.

He also accused nurses of arriving late for work and talking on their cell phones during working hours.

“There are people who arrive at the clinic from 4am to 5am and they are only helped after 8am. Sometimes they will go home without getting their medication. As far as we know the gates should be open at 7.30am,” said Govender.

The Ilembe health department spokesperson Bonie Zulu said they would investigate the accusations.
