Police raid Ballito gambling den
The cafe’s windows were tinted black and the business appeared to operate late at night.
The Inet Café operating on Compensation Beach Road in Ballito was raided by the Umhlali police on Friday night after suspicions of illegal gambling.
According to a reliable source who was in the vicinity of the café when the raid happened, about 20 police officers stormed into the store late Friday night.
“The place is made out to be an Internet café but the cafe’s windows are tinted black and the doors are always locked even during the day.
“They open until late at night.
“On Friday night one of the police officers rang the bell at the Inet Café and asked to go in. The woman who answered the door said she would call the manager.
“While she was gone an officer jumped over the gate to get in and suddenly all the lights went out.
“The police manged to get in, switch the lights back on and this is when they found all the computers reportedly used for unlicenced gambling.
“The manager was arrested,” he said.
Umhlali police spokesperson Vinny Pillay confirmed that 35 computers and back-up hard drives were confiscated as well as R20 000 cash.
The owner of the café is still to provide documents to prove they are registered to run a gambling operation.
The manager of Inet Café was released yesterday on R2 000 bail and will appear in KwaDukuza court on Wednesday.
