Salt Rock man held at gunpoint for photographing robbery

When the burglars saw that they were being photographed, they pulled out a firearm.

A concerned neighbour went from spending a quiet Thursday afternoon at his Salt Rock home to having a gun pointed at his head in a split second.

While working in his garage in Fayle Road Donavan Harvey heard his neighbour’s alarm go off.

“The alarm went off at about 12.45pm.

“I looked over at their house to see what was going on and saw four guys loading my neighbour’s television into their fancy, white Golf GTI with a FB71TS GP registration,” said Harvey.

He ran over to the neighbour’s house, shouted at the thieves and took a photo of them with his phone.

“They did not like me taking photos and next thing I knew, the one guy turned around and pointed a firearm at me.

“They took my phone and jumped into the car.

“The whole thing happened in less than a minute.”

Left shaken but uninjured Harvey  said the robbers got away with his neighbour’s television and his phone.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay warned people not investigate situations like this on their own.

“Criminals are usually heavily armed during the December period especially.

“We urge you not to go out when you hear a neighbour’s alarm go off.

“Rather press your panic button, phone your security company or SAPS or alert your neighbourhood watch,” said Pillay.
