Crowds flock to Durban beaches on New Years Day

Bluebottles put an unwelcome sting in the otherwise welcoming ocean on the Dolphin Coast.

Thousands of people made their way to Durban and Dolphin Coast beaches on New Year’s Day enjoying glorious sunny weather.

The Durban beachfront area was heavily congested.

Unconfirmed reports indicate some emergency vehicles were allegedly pelted with beer bottles by unruly crowds, but it is not yet clear where this took place and what the reasons behind the crowd behaviour were, reported The Berea Mail.

Samukelisiwe Ndlobu, Lee Gumede, Lindelanie Mdluli, Maxwell Mdluli, Siboniso Mbokazi, (back) Mduduzi Ncubane and Sphola Gumede took to Salt Rock beach to welcome the New Year.

Beachgoers have returned today to make the most of the first public holiday of the new year but not with the numbers of yesterday.

KwaDukuza lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu said that today the crowds were at about 70% of yesterday’s numbers.

Other than the tragic drowning at the unprotected beach between Blythedale and Zinkwazi yesterday, there were no other serious incidents.

“Plenty of blue bottles arrived and we treated four people with severe stings,” he said.
