ANCYL accuses Blythedale residents of being racist

"Our beaches should reflect our demographics and thus should be renamed after our heroes and heroines." - Musa Zondi

The ANC Youth League in the greater KwaDukuza region has accused the Blythedale Ratepayers Association and residents of being racist towards the young black people who used the beach over the festive season.

Residents of the small seaside village and suburb of Stanger were outraged last month when more than 10 000 people created “absolute chaos” during all-night parties on the Day of Reconciliation, December 16.

One person died from a stab wound when paramedics were prevented from treating him by unruly party goers. Residents reported seeing people having sex and drinking on the beach. New Year’s Day played out a similar scene as thousands of people descended to the beach, once again partying all night long.

However, the ANCYL said it was unacceptable that the Blythedale Ratepayers Association was claiming monopoly over the beach. Regional secretary Musa Zondi said beaches should be used by everyone regardless of their socio-economic status or race.

“Their complaints are not justifiable because they targeted Blythedale Beach because it used by the majority of young black people,” he said.

The league claimed that residents’ complaints stemmed from their hatred for black people.

“At the core of these people’s flimsy complaints is bottomless hatred for the black folk, it is those elements who suffer from apartheid era hangover. The unfortunate part is the fact that we are yet to hear complaints from the same circles in relation to events such as Ballito Pro and Rage matric events which is attended mainly by whites, ironically. It is public knowledge now that these events are equally characterised by similar levels of intoxication, yet their silence is deafening as if it is business as usual.

“Are these really outcries of genuine concern? Absolutely not! As the ANCYL in KwaDukuza Region we are determined to expose such opportunists and charlatans who hide their racial arrogance behind organisations. These are just few big-headed individuals who are aggrieved about black people and the ANC.

“The sooner they learn to accept the fact that the ANC is a leader of society voted by the majority of people in the entire region, the better. Those elements intent in trying to undermine democracy and social cohesion through hook and crook shall never triumph.”

The league also announced plans to lobby for all beaches in the region to be renamed.

“Our beaches should reflect our demographics and thus should be renamed after our heroes and heroines.”

“We strongly believe that Blythedale Beach must be renamed into Bonga Zungu Beach and Thompson Bay Beach as Cebo Mfekayi Beach. These are former youth leaders who led the struggle for young people and also led as councillors.

“We don’t even know who that Thompson was or his contribution in this country. One thing we are resolute on is never to allow colonisers to lead us from the grave. Perpetrators of the system against humanity remain our enemies.”

A Blythedale Ratepayers Association spokesperson denied that the the complaints were targeted at black people.

“It was not about race, it was about the people’s behaviour.”

He confirmed that a meeting between the association and the league was planned to be held soon.
