Mtunzini’s Amy Burger is at home on the trail

The Umhlanga trail run delighted participants with the perfect combination of stunning surrounds and challenging tracks.

Brave men and women recently put on their running shoes to take part in the grueling 18km Umhlanga Trail Run, with the leading lady of the pack being a proud Mtunzini runner.

The trail run, which consisted of a forest single track, sugar cane dirt roads, beach sand and river crossings started at 6am and was a true test of endurance, which Amy Burger has plenty of.

“It was epic! The last section on the beach was not a glamorous ending as I wiped out getting knocked over by the surf,” said Burger, who finished with a comfortable 30 seconds to spare ahead of second placed Lisa Collett with a time of 1:33.58.

Burger has done her fair share of road running, but she said her favourite will always be the trails.

“I love trail running, and the challenges that go with running off road. I did the Comrades this year and it took forever for my body to recover. Running on the trails is far easier on the body.”

The race started and finished at the Millennium Stage at the Umhlanga Main Beach and Burger took home R1000 in prize money for her efforts.

Chairman and organiser for Umhlanga Tourism and the Umhlanga Summer Festival, Peter Rose said it was magnificent to see the promenade buzzing.

“We had around 500 runners on our course this year. It was a great event, with great weather.”
