R102 Fairbreeze a no-go zone

Motorists are advised to avoid travelling on the R102 road from Tongaat to Ballito. Traffic is being diverted into Maidstone Village which is currently congested

Almost 300 Fairbreeze township residents have taken to the R102 road, between Tongaat and Ballito, in what is reported to be a violent protest.

The protesters have since burnt the main power box in the area leaving Maidstone, Jon Roz and Fairbreeze in darkness.

According to business owner Faraad Dawood, the protesters are unhappy after being left without electricity in the township for the past two days.

Police are struggling to control the growing crowd.

“The protesters are burning the bushes on the side of the road as well as the fencing and signage from the Shoprite Usave store.

“The protest started about two hours ago and the crowd is starting to get violent.

“So far there are about 10 police vans and they are struggling to control the crowd. More police vans are on their way.”

Motorists are advised to avoid travelling on the R102 road from Tongaat to Ballito.

Traffic is being diverted into Maidstone Village which is currently congested.

SAPS Tongaat, Durban North, Verulam, Metro and Public Order Police are on scene.
