Spread the love on World Cancer Day
8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year
As we make our way closer to February, an important day has been marked down on the calendar – World Cancer Day.
A truly global event taking place every year on February 4, World Cancer Day unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer.
It aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action.
The theme for Cancer Day this year until 2018 is ‘We can. I can’, highlighting how everyone – as a collective or as individuals – can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.
Currently, 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which, 4 million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years).
World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to spread the word and raise the profile of cancer in people’s minds.
“It’s exciting to see how every year there is greater support for World Cancer Day.
“We’re delighted to back this important initiative and would encourage everyone to get involved,” said Kate Allen, Executive Director of Science & Public Affairs – World Cancer Research Fund International.
What is cancer?
Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body.
Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body.
Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss and a change in bowel movements.
While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may have other causes.
Over 100 types of cancers affect humans.
