Salt Rock robbers tracked through stolen laptop

The 'Silver Polo gang' has been targeting homes on the Dolphin Coast recently.

One of the men reportedly  involved in a spate of burglaries on the Dolphin Coast is believed to have been killed in an attempt to arrest him yesterday.

The gang of four men driving a silver Polo with ND number plates has been very active recently, hitting a house in Zen Drive two weeks ago and threatening an elderly man and his caregiver with guns and also attempting to hit two other homes in the same street that day.

The same gang then are believed to have been behind the break-ins of two homes in Gifford Crescent in Salt Rock on Monday morning, becoming involved in a shoot out with local security officers after the alarm was raised.

Alpha Security’s Rex Hunt told The Courier that a laptop stolen from one of the homes in Gifford Crescent was used to trace the whereabouts of the criminals.

“With the help of the owner we used the laptop to trace them to a place near Inanda Dam just north of Durban,” said Hunt.

Members of the police’s flying squad were sent to Inanda with detectives from Umhlali SAPS on standby.

At the time, another armed robbery was reported nearby in KwaMashu.

Alpha Security and the police responded to this robbery and one man was shot – believed to have been the driver of the Polo.

“We have not yet confirmed for a fact that this is one of the men in the gang but we believe him to be,” said Hunt.

A firearm was recovered and has been identified as the same one used in the robberies in Salt Rock.

“The tracking of the laptop was only possible with the owners help.

“This just goes to show that people must get involved in the fight against crime, not just see themselves as victims.”

The remaining three men remain at large.
