Protesters temporarily shutdown water supply

It is believed that the protest was against Ilembe municipality in relation to service delivery

Disgruntled protesters in Sundumbili, Mandeni damaged the reservoir, temporarily shutting down water supply until this afternoon.

The protest action which started early this morning has since stopped.

Residents and businesses were not affected by the action as the reservoir takes about a day and a half to empty with normal water usage.

The Isithebe Industrial park and surrounding areas would have been worst affected if the water supply ran out.

Mandeni Business Against Crime’s Steve Fox said that the protest was against Ilembe Municipality regarding service delivery.

“This is an ongoing problem in the area. The issues don’t get resolved and then people and businesses are affected when the water supply is shut down during protests.”

In June last year, protesters held the Sundumbili, Mandeni and Isithebe areas hostage by shutting down their water supply for five days.

Ithala Development Finance Corporation manager Stewart Adams said about 200 factories in Isithebe would have suffered if the protest continued.

According to Fox the water pumps are now operating and security issues regarding action against future protests are being addressed.
