UPDATE: Toddler reunited with dad
The child had been passed from one person to the next before they managed to find his father
The four-year-old child who was reportedly abandoned by his family in Nkobongo has been reunited with his father.
Last week, The Courier reported that Umhlali police were looking for any relatives of young Sihle.
Umhlali SAPS warrant officer Shaleen Ramlakan said the child had been passed from one person to the next before they managed to find his father.
“The child was dropped off with an elderly woman who we believe was his grandmother. She was unstable and an alcoholic. She then left the child with a relative. This particular relative had two other children and could not afford to take care of the toddler. Social welfare turned him away because he had no form of identification. We could not find his mother, father or grandmother. After a lot of pressure eventually social welfare agreed to take the child in last week.”
Ramlakan said the police continued to search for the child’s family.
“By word of mouth, we managed to track down the child’s father in Shaka’s Head who said he wants to take care of the child, but can not because he is unemployed. We have arranged for KwaMama Care Centre to keep the child until the father finds a job.”
