Education director replaced
The Ilembe matric pass rate for 2015 was 59,2%, the second lowest in the province
The Education department has re-deployed the Ilembe district director, Thembi Vilakazi, and appointed Dr Musa Madondo in her place.
This was revealed by education department spokesperson Muzi Mahlabi last Thursday.
Vilakazi is now the assets director at head office. She has been under attack from the ANC Youth League since matric results were released in January, accusing her of being behind the dismal performance of the district.
Similarily last year the South African Democratic Teachers Union launched an offensive against her with similar accusations.
The Ilembe matric pass rate for 2015 was 59,2%, the second lowest in the province.
In 2016 the pass rate slipped further from grace landing at 52.4% and making it the worst performing district in the province.
Mahlabi did not explain why Vilakazi was re-deployed despite allegations that it was due to the pressure from the ANCYL.
ANCYL secretary Musa Zondi said they welcomed the new district director.
“We hope this is the beginning of a prosperous journey towards improving education, not just in matric but for all grades,” said Zondi.
Zondi said they were prepared to give the necessary support wherever it was needed.
“We don’t have a problem with Vilakazi – all we wanted was good results and should the new director fail to deliver, we will take the necessary action. We want children to pass,” he said.
The ANCYL also urged law enforcement authorities to detain all pupils in school uniforms who are found walking around town or sitting at restaurants and taverns during school hours.
