REMINDER: Many Durban roads closed for Armed Forces day
President Zuma will receive the salute from the SANDF during the military parade for the sixth time this year
Armed Forces Day (AFD) is a day on which we honour the members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) by showing our support and gratitude to them for upholding the constitution, defending our territorial integrity and protecting our people.
Since 2012 South Africans have celebrated Armed Forces Day on February 21 each year, and in 2017 the celebration of our men and women in uniform will take place in Durban.
As the main functionary, President Zuma will receive the salute from the SANDF during the military parade for the sixth time this year.
The Chief of the SANDF, General Solly Shoke has authorised the hosting of the AFD celebration and the centenary commemoration of the sinking of the SS Mendi to be held concurrently today (Tuesday) at Moses Mabhida Stadium and the English Channel in England where the ship sank.
The proceedings commenced at 10am.
