Severe weather causing floods, uprooting trees on the Dolphin Coast

Take care when driving in the rain as many accidents have been reported today already.

Severe rain over the course of last night has caused flooding in some areas of the Dolphin Coast and turned some roads into virtual rivers.

The wet weather has been with us for a few days now – with 26,8mm being measured at King Shaka International Airport on Monday.

Last night, however, was the big one with some areas in Ballito reportedly measuring more 140mm.

Many business owners in the area woke up to flooding on their business premises this morning. Here, the storm drain behind Cupboard Value in Ballito Drive was blocked, leaving the rain water to build up until it flooded the business.

Roads near Chakas Cove are almost completely under water and businesses throughout the North Coast woke up to flooding on their premises.

The R102 between Ballito and Umhlali – and many other roads – are flooded and traffic is badly affected.

According IPSS Medical Emergency’s Paul Herbst, between 6am and 8am they had responded to 9 separate accidents already.

The weather has also uprooted trees in some areas – one tree fell over the N2 near Tinley Manor and another on Colwyn Drive in Sheffield near the sharp bend where the sinkhole appeared two years ago.

Meanwhile the Genazzano road opposite Seatides informal settlement is completely flooded and road users are advised to rather use the M4.

Warnings have been issued by numerous emergency response agencies for driver to be particularly careful in this inclement weather.

According to SA weather forecaster, Julius Mahlangu the heavy rain is expected to continue, with a heavy rain forecast of 80% for the rest of the day and more moderate rain for tomorrow.
