Toddler drowns in pit latrine in Stanger
The young girl's lifeless body was retrieved from the 25-metre-deep hole
The body of a 3-year-old girl was retrieved from a pit latrine in the Ntshawini area in Stanger this afternoon (Thursday).
According to IPSS Medical Rescue‘s Paul Herbst, the young girl was taken to the toilet by her gran, who then needed to run back to their home. When she returned, her granddaughter was gone.
Friends and family immediately began searching for the toddler.
Paramedics, along with the KwaDukuza Fire Department and SAPS, were called on scene approximately 4 hours after she disappeared.
As she was last seen in the pit latrine, a decision was made to investigate the 25-metre-deep hole which was filled with water.
A honey sucker was used to drain the water, and soon paramedics discovered and positively identified the young girl before using high angle equipment to retrieve the body.
